Both 6-point sockets and 12-point sockets can be used for 6-point nuts. The biggest difference is the operating angles and torque. Socket with more angles means the more points where different angles can be matched with the hexagonal nut. Compared with the 6-point socket, the 12-point socket has twice the angle and can be directly fit into the 6 angle nut. In other words, you only need to turn the 12-point socket up to 30 degrees and the socket will fit into the nut. It makes a significant difference in narrow and dim environments: 12-point sockets fit into 6-point nuts faster than 6-point sockets
However, the 6-point socket is better than the 12-point socket in terms of torque and avoiding nut damage. There are two reasons:
1.) The wall thickness of the 6-point socket is thicker than that of the 12-point socket, and the torque is applied more evenly on all sides of the 6-point nut
2.) The contact area of 6pt socket and nut is side rather than point, thereby avoiding the 6 corners from being worn into an arc shape.
Generally, to a professional craftsman, a complete set of 6pt sockets is a "must-have" and a complete set of 12pt sockets is a "nice-to-have "
Then, how to choose the proper sockets? First of all, raw materials determine at least 50% whether or not they are good tools or metal parts. High quality sockets are usually made of CR-V(Chrome Vanadium Steel), which is a common alloy steel that is highly resistant to wear and maintains stable high hardness properties after heat treatment.
Because chromium can increase hardness; and vanadium can increase toughness. The combination of the two, coupled with heat treatment in good conditions, can contribute to a dramatic increase in durability and tolerance accuracy. That's why top tool brands dare to offer lifetime warranties. Like FIXMAN, all sockets are made of CR-V material with “Chrome Vanadium” sign on the body.
As a practical integration of socket tools, FIXMAN mechanical tool sets are highly recommended by professionals.
